20 Qualities of a Professional Nurse

The professional nurse is outstanding in his/her area of care; this he/she is able to achieve by employing certain qualities at his/her disposal. These special qualities differentiate him/her from all other members of the health team.

1. Honest: One of the qualities that make the nurse outstanding is honesty. He/she is taught to be truthful at all times when dealing with the patient and his family, and when dealing with colleagues and other members of the health team. By so doing, he is able to earn everyone’s confidence/trust.

2. Caring: The nurse is able to give the client proper attention. He/she is compassionate in taking care of the clients; the comfort of the patient is of utmost importance to him/her.

3. Empathetic: he/she is able to understand the feelings of the patient and treat him the way he/she would love to be treated.

4. Observant: The nurse is an observant person; she is able to monitor/observe the client closely to know when there is improvement in his condition or when there is deterioration. He/she is also able to observe his environment whether it is safe or not.

5. Skillful: He is skillful in handling the problems of the patient. These skills which are enhanced by his training enable him to properly deal with his client’s problems.

6. Decisive: He/she is able to analyse situations and take prompt decisions.

7. Confidential: The nurse is able to hold in confidence whatever information he has concerning his clients. He does not divulge the client’s personal information to any other person.

8. Physically fit: The nurse is physically fit because the job is demanding – it involves lifting, hours of standing, long periods of procedures, etc.

9. Emotionally stable: He is also emotionally stable; he should be in his right state of mind. It takes emotional stability for a person to take right decisions and also be accountable for his actions.

10. Good interpersonal skills: He should possess good interpersonal skills to be able to interact with other members of the health team. He should be able to interact with doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists, dentists, nutritionists, etc.

11. Teachable: The nurse should be someone who is willing to learn what would add value to his/her life.

12. Respect: He must have respect for the rights of the patient and other members of the medical team. He should particularly be willing to respect the cultural differences, religious rights, etc of the clients.

13. Good communicator: He should also possess good communication skills in order to effectively act as a link between the medical team and the client. He should be able to communicate also with his colleagues.

14. Flexible: The nurse should also be fairly flexible in his approach to work. He should be able to adapt when there is a change in work schedule/situations.

15. Hospitable: He should be friendly to the patient and family, as well as to professional colleagues. He should be able to give the clients a smile when dealing with them.

16. Obedient: Nursing is a disciplined profession; therefore the nurse must be willing to obey hierarchy and also obey laid down rules of the profession.

17. Neat: The professional nurse is always neat. He is conscious of his environment and makes sure he is not a vehicle for the spread of microorganisms.

18. Cautious: The nurse is careful while dealing with the patient, his colleagues and members of the health team. He tries to avoid all forms of errors while compiling his records and other documents.

19. Intelligent: The nurse must be an intelligent person who is able to take initiative on his/her own; and must be able to interpret prescriptions and the nursing care plan. He mustn’t be someone who would not kill the patient or make irreparable errors as a result of his unintelligent decisions.

20. Agile: The nurse is supposed to be an agile person and must be able to respond swiftly to all situations. Time is of the essence while dealing with human lives; he/she must be able to act fast to save situations before they deteriorate.
