Being stylish has absolutely nothing to do with age, but in order to remain looking like a lady one must adapt their style as they get older. We’ve all heard the saying ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ and as much as we all think we know what this means when looking at other women in the street it can be harder to spot on ourselves. Here are our top tips to keep looking catwalk chic once reaching the age of fifty…

Know your apples from your pears

With age comes knowledge, and this means that by now you need to be aware of your body shape. From apple, pear, round and petite everyone has a body shape and there are some clothes that are better suited and more flattering to different types. There are many different types but the most common are curvy, full figured, boyish, petite, apple, and pear. Look in the mirror and decide which one your body shape fits into, and then you can find the best clothes to show of your assets.

Get the right cut

Curvy women should always think about the waist; belted coats and dresses are wardrobe staples for these bodies. For the fuller figured lady avoid kaftans and floaty tops as these will only make you look bigger, instead go for tailored pieces and wrap style dresses. If you have a slender boyish figure you need to create an illusion of curves, go for v-necks to create a bust and empire skirts for hips. Petites look great in colour blocking or textured pieces, pears try layering on your top half to balance your shape, and apples go for high-waisted skirts and trousers.

Clever Colours

Don’t be afraid of colour as you get older, a lady of any age can wear fluorescent pink if she chooses, it’s how you wear the shades that matters. With bright colours always try just an accent, a shocking pink top mixed with a black tailored suit will be much more flattering that a bright pink suit and black shirt. Also don’t forget to experiment with patterned pieces to – these can add interest to your look without overpowering if done thoughtfully, say with a shirt or casual jacket.

Accessorise your outfit to the max

Whatever the occasion, from work to evening event, accessories are always instrumental to setting your style credentials high. Scarves and handbags can transform an outfit as can key pieces of jewellery. A statement necklace is the perfect pick me up to a plain top or block-coloured dress. Adding a touch of sparkle never goes a miss either, a simple diamond bracelet can work wonders for any look.

Don’t forget the shoes

Embrace your femininity and don’t shy away from high heels, but just be aware of your limits. Whilst 6 inch platforms may have to be left behind a good pair of high Mary Janes are always a girl’s best friend. Flat shoes are also extremely stylish for any age from the classic ballet pump to the traditional brogue; flats will never go out of fashion.
