So for those of you who don’t already know it is a non-profit Organization that serves millions of children over the decades and help oversee the different aspects of helping the children with their transitioning into young adulthood with proper healthcare system in place with medical and dental clinics, educational facilities like the library, computer labs, and recreational areas like the sports & play centers, activity spaces & multi-purpose rooms and finally, staff offices are also in place with plenty of volunteer workers to serve these families everyday in each of these respective community centers.
The community centers offers a diversity of crucial benefits for the children, all supporting Children International goal of breaking their cycle of poverty. Most CI kids don’t have a regular childhood and a safe clean place to spend time in. So here at the center, it is a place where families are treated with care & dignity and the children escape negative influences such as being part of criminal activities like gang violence and drugs. It provides them a “safe haven” and facilitates them with their life-changing programs and services.
CI Centers don’t just improve the lives of the children, it is a place where they can call “home”. They’re a powerful representation of a strong support group that can help make a difference and also care enough to go the extra miles to make that long-term investment and commitment to each and every one that is a part of the “family”.
When you change one child’s life, your impact is multiplied over future generations. And that difference is made, one child at a time. That is where sponsorship program comes in and help play a major role in matching up each sponsor with a child (or multiple children)
So if this is something completely new to you, you must be asking what is a sponsorship exactly and how does it work? I think by this point, you should almost have a full picture from what you’ve gathered earlier on in (Part 1) of my post. Anyway, just to lay it out in technical terms Sponsorship is basically a monthly giving program (you can do it yearly or quarterly / or additional gratuity towards the community) that helps to break the cycle of poverty.
To put it in the simplest way, it resembles a long distance “adoption”. You pick a child (you can do it on their website) or let Children International assign one to you and they get you set up immediately with the necessary administrative works so that you can get to know him/her better with the full paper records of his/her family income, background and other details in your child’s file. All you need to know will be prepared for you and you can begin your journey! It is a very straightforward process really. No large periods of waiting time of whatsoever to sponsor a child, there are plenty of children on wait list. They are between the ages as young as 3, all the way up to 15-16.
When you sponsor a child, you’re connected with one who needs the help & support to empower her to change her life. You can write to them anytime you want to and basically start bridging a “long-distance relationship” with them. It is a connection and commitment built over time and distance with great technical support from the CI Team to translate/transport letters between the child & sponsor.
Every time you receive a new updated picture, a letter or a coloring from them, everything else would just fade away into the background for the rest of the day. Possibly even for the rest of the week or month, if you take it out to look at it over and over again.
And the best part of it all?
You can meet your child when you are ready to do so! You can set up to arrange it with the CI team (around 6 – 8 weeks in advance) and they will make the necessary arrangements to meet him/her when you arrive and it’s probably going to be the most magical moment of your life. Especially if you’ve been connecting with each other over period of years.
They will be out of the program once they are over 18 years old and by then, they will be independent and self-sufficient and they’ll be able to inspire and empower others around them too. They usually get involve actively as youth leaders at the CI Center as a stepping stone for them to acquire leadership qualities and training skills to teach and nurture the younger ones to prepare them for their future choices that they decide to make.
Children International has expanded and grown rapidly in all aspects of their life work and contributions by standing firmly by their long-lasting mission in “Unleashing the Power of (Every) ONE.
Separately, ONE meaning one individual is unique, “unleash the power” is to empower. Put together, it means that everyone has to pass on what you know, to empower each other.
Your individual act, has a ripple effect that will change the world.
Mother Theresa once said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.
The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.
There are no great things, only small things with great love. It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.
Spread love everywhere you go, let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.
Intense love does not measure, it just gives.”
