There are already countless articles about the best flagship phones in the market including the Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, and HTC One, but let us face it; not all of us can afford those phones. Not that we don’t have the money, but we just think that a good midrange phone will suffice with our needs. After all, we can live without the latest graphics and 720p displays were great just about a year ago.
So if you are in the market for a great midrange phone, why not consider previous flagship phones? They were the best just a year ago, and are still not that far-off from the best of today:
Google Nexus 4
This was the hottest phone last year and there was even a shortage of supply from LG. This is the device that made skinned phones cool. With its success, there is suddenly a clamor for smartphones with no manufacturer skin on top. And the specs are not too bad too; it has a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal memory. With the newest flagship phones like the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One having skinned versions available from Google, the price for the Nexus 4 has dropped. It can now be had for around $300 with no contract.
Samsung Galaxy S3
This is the phone that changed the smartphone landscape. Before the Samsung Galaxy S3, Android phones were considered by many casual fans as inferior and cheaper alternatives to the iPhone. That all changed with the surge in popularity of the Galaxy S3. The US version had a powerful dual-core Snapdragon processor and featured the then ICS OS, but is upgradeable to Jellybean. Up until now, it is still one of the best smartphones in the market. It has an 8MP camera that takes great pictures and some of the best features set short of the new Galaxy S4. Best part is that you can buy this phone at about $300-$400 without contract and about $50 with contract.
HTC One X+
This one came out in the last quarter of 2012 so it is relatively new. That is why the price is still at about $500. This is an upgrade over the device that competed with the Samsung Galaxy S3m which is the HTC One X. What it did is improve on the previous model by adding a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM, upgrading to Jellybean 4.1, and including the largest internal memory storage on a mobile device at the time, which is 64GB. It also has an 8MP rear camera that is supported by HTC’s ImageSense. Like previous HTC models, it has the gorgeous unibody design, giving it a sexy look. If you do not have the money for an HTC One, the HTC One X+ is not a bad choice.
You just have to remember that these phones were the best not too long ago. Whether it will be for personal use or as a business phone, these previous flagship phones can meet your needs for a great midrange phone.
